Aesthetic Communities and Contextual Translation of Communal Art

Call for Participation

There is always a loss in any work of interpretation, and this does not necessarily refer to the loss of the original meaning (the original historical context or the authenticity of an art work) as such but to the loss of the original conditions of reception. In regard to the Soviet art of Stalinism and beyond, art critic Viktor Tsupitsyn argues in The Museological Unconscious that these works were produced with the collective aspect of reception embedded in the very production and he describes this phenomenon as a "collective museological unconscious." With the loss of the communal aspects of seeing which came with the demise of communism, these monuments of the times past are inherently deterritorialized and displaced when viewed in the context of Western representational structures, which condition an atomized, isolated and individuated viewer. The question then is, how is it possible to recapture or rather representationally translate communal reception when the embedded specificity of communist community has itself undergone such a radical transformation ? What is the role of the curator in the perceptual politics that perpetuates through and around a work of art ? Can a work of art intended for a collective optical unconscious in the original context of its production create new forms of undetermined and situational communities when exposed, represented and reinterpreted anew ? What happens to the work when both its intended message and its addressee are lost ? What becomes of a specific community in which the work is situated ? What is the role of the one -the critic, curator, historian and writer, who exposes, reinterprets and repositions the communal work ?

Would like to pose the double question of communal art's function within communities in which these works are physically located as well as the aesthetic communities that come into being temporarily around a work of art.

The program is comprised of two parts. The first part entitled "Aesthetic Communities and Contextual Translation of Communal Art" will take place in Yerevan, in August 15-17th, while the second part "The Communal Function of a Monument" will be held in Ijevan, in August 18-20, a city located in Northern Armenia and close to the Georgian and Azerbaijani borders. For the first part in Yerevan we would like to invite proposals that deal with various theoretical frameworks, historical experiences and examples of aesthetic communities and contextual aspects of reception in terms of the production of aesthetic experience. The second part takes the artistic forum called "International Symposium for Sculpture organized in Ijevan in 1985-1991 by art critic Saro Sarukhanian in the context of perestroika politics and dissipation of pressure of the centralised bureaucratic and ideological apparatus of the communist party as a starting point to pose questions related to curatorial practices. Can these practices be connected to community art or it is an artistic prerogative to produce a communally visible and viable art ? How can aesthetic objects from the past be engaged in re-evaluation of a site specific public sculpture in ways that this re-evaluation may empower local communities to engage in the striving for cultural and social change ? How can we communally re-evaluate the work in ways that might permit escape from oblivion on the one hand and sacralisation on the other ?

The Program is structured to accommodate daily lectures by invited specialists, round-table discussions and presentations by the participants. The presentations should focus on curating and aesthetic communities or curating community art.

There is no fee for participation. However, the participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. AICA-Armenia does not provide funding for logistics.

Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit research and production proposals to become a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Candidates can either apply with a topic of their own or for a project formulated by the institute itself. In order to realise these projects, the Jan van Eyck offers the necessary made-to-measure artistic, technical and auxiliary preconditions.

The Jan van Eyck Academie is an institute for research and production in the fields of fine art, design and theory. Every year, 48 international researchers realise their individual or collective projects in the artistic and critical environment that is the Jan van Eyck. In doing so, they are advised by a team of artists, designers and theoreticians who have won their spurs globally. The researchers can also avail themselves of facilities that support their projects from first concept to public presentation. All in all, the Jan van Eyck offers artists, designers and theoreticians time and space to do research and realise productions, either about topics of their own choosing or as part of a project formulated by the institute itself.

Multi-Disciplinary Research
Artists, designers and theoreticians at the Jan van Eyck Academie work alongside each other and establish cross-disciplinary exchange. The academy is not led by predetermined leitmotivs. Artists, designers and theoreticians can submit independently formulated proposals for research and/or production in the departments of Fine Art, Design and Theory. They can also participate in research projects formulated by the departments (please see http://www.janvaneyck.nl/). The research projects, miscellaneous in nature, make the Jan van Eyck a multi-disciplinary institute. This also shows in the programme of the institute. Researchers, departments and the institute organise various weekly activities, to which special speakers are invited : lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings, exhibitions, discussions,... The Jan van Eyck community and external interested parties are welcome to attend this programme. The result is a dynamic and critical exchange between the different agents from within and outside of the Jan van Eyck.

Facilities
Researchers are advised by a team of artists, designers and theoreticians who have won their spurs globally. They receive their own studio and a stipend. Furthermore, researchers can make use of all kinds of facilities which support their projects, from first concept to public presentation, including the library, the documentation centre and various workshops : materials (wood and other materials) ; time-based productions ; analogue and digital (online and offline) publishing (including photography and silkscreen). They can also get assistance with their print work, the editing and distribution of publications and the publicity of events.

Applications
Candidates applying for Fine Art, Design or Theory are asked to propose an individual research project. They can also indicate their interest in participating in one of the projects that are offered by the department of their choice or one of the other departments. The academic year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Research candidates can apply for a one-year or two-year research period starting annually on 1 January. It is also possible to apply to do research for a different period and with a different starting date. L'association Commissaires d'Expositions Associés c-e-a a été créée, entre autres, par Keren Detton à l'automne 2007.
Cette association a pour but de fédérer les commissaires indépendants ou non exerçant ou ayant exercé en France. C'est une plateforme d'information et de réflexion sur la profession.
Les fondateurs ont mis en place, avec 2 sociologues, un questionnaire basé principalement sur les modalités économiques de notre exercice. Ce questionnaire est maintenant en ligne et chacun peut y répondre. Nous avons besoin d'un maximum de réponses pour garantir la précision de cette enquête, et passer à une étape de communication et d'action à partir des différents enjeux juridiques, économiques, et théoriques du métier.
Dans un deuxième temps aussi c-e-a devrait pouvoir se situer sur une scène internationale et pointer les particularismes français tout en devenant un relais d'informations actif.
J'espère que tu pourras remplir ce questionnaire et le faire passer à ton réseau, en premier lieu celui des anciens élèves de l'Ecole du Magasin.
Serait-il possible de bénéficier d'un petit encart "Réseaux" sur le portail de l'école ? du type "L'association c-e-a (Commissaires d'Exposition Associés), avec le soutien de la Délégation aux Arts Plastiques, met en ligne une enquête sur les paramètres du commissariat d'expositions en France.

Call for Applications : Imaginary Property

Imaginary Property, a new research project of the Design department, initiated by Florian Schneider, aspires to explore new potentials for design practices across various registers. The project is set up as a realm of experimentation at the intersections of design-theory and image-production. It is a laboratory where emerging concepts and terminologies are set to a series of tests.
What challenges emerge from the paradoxes that research into Oimaginary property¹ has given rise to ? How could these potentially generate new rules of production, bearing in mind that property relations are constantly exchanging meanings ? Against this background : do we have to rethink and re-evaluate the notion of Odesign¹ as such ?

The research project Imaginary Property consists of three parts that are inextricably linked up with each other and are to be addressed simultaneously rather than consecutively.
The first part is analytical in nature and traces the primarily non-juridical impact as well as the practical implications of the concept of imaginary property¹ through various disciplines such as philosophy, psychoanalysis, economics, cybernetics, architecture, new media and design theory. The analytical part will start off with a symposium (on 6 June) that shows the scope of the project and its impact on contemporary design practices. The symposium will bring about an interview and lecture series in which guest speakers partake.
The second part consists of a series of evaluations and examinations of experimental design, Ocounter-design¹ or Ore-design¹ projects. Specific proposals for new models of ownership based on open-source and free circulation of networked images will be developed and realized. Supposing that images are the products of struggles for imagination, this part examines in a practical way how social relationships are configured, designed and performed in connection with the images that are supposed to be owned, used and displayed as one's property.
Imaginary Property deals with the imagination and the redrawing of social relationships with people who could also use and enjoy images, modify or alter images, play images or play with images. Is it possible, practically and conceptually, to (reverse) engineer imaginary property¹ ? How to show highly valuable images and visualize processes in a way that anticipates and allows for modulations, modifications and unpredictable proliferation ? Can a museum redesign a show and make it or even parts of its collection freely accessible through the digital public domain ? Is it possible for a political campaign to go fully Oopen source¹ ? How can such a public release be realized and what would it actually look like ?
Thirdly, the results of the analytical part and the examinations will be documented more or less in real-time and made accessible on a multimedia website. The idea is further to make a publication in print as well as a collaborative, networked video project.
The research project Imaginary Property is looking for design practitioners who wish to tackle fundamental issues and query conventions of disciplines such as film, multimedia, web design, networking and architecture. It further seeks to involve theory-minded researchers who are not afraid of Oan image¹.

Ils sont attribués après sélection des candidats par une commission composée d'artistes, critiques, collectionneurs, galeristes, éditeurs, et institutionnels (école d'art, musée, conseiller pour les arts plastiques). Sélection uniquement sur dossier.

être artiste plasticien, âgé de moins de 35 ans, domicilié à Marseille (il est impossible d'habiter dans les ateliers)

Conditions d'attribution : La commission se réunira en juillet 2007 La période d'attribution est de 23 mois, non renouvelable. Le loyer mensuel est de 1,20€ par m2 Les surfaces varient de 60 à 140 m2, (hauteur sous plafond 4m et plus)

Une convention d'occupation sera établie entre la Ville de Marseille et chaque artiste sélectionné. Entrée prévisible dans les ateliers fin 2007.

The curating of Internet-based art on the Internet is a multifaceted communication-process between Internet-users with all kinds of different backgrounds regarding the content. Along with the changing conditions of production and reception of art on the Internet came new possibilities of curation which deserve study. [CC] "circulating contexts—curating media/net/art" is a series of experimental long-term research projects hosted by the Vienna-based organisation CONT3XT.NET, investigating current tendencies in the curation of (New) Media and Internet Art. For the catalogue which will be presented in October 2007 in Vienna as well as online, we currently seek contributions to the following sub-projects.
DISCUSSIONS 1 June - 31 August 2007 In a first move participants are invited to contribute to the mailinglist [CC] "curating media/net/art—discussions"
During this period five common topics concerning the curation of (New) Media and Internet Art will be the starting point for discussions, lead by the participants. Excerpts of the contributions to the mailinglist will be published in the catalogue.

The papers should be limited to max. 15.000 characters and must be licencened under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/). [CC] "curating media/net/art—papers" is open to all thematic fields but may be related to the topics above too. Selected papers will be printed in the forthcoming catalogue.
